Statements of the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran on Pressures Against South Africa and Baseless Allegations Against Iran

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Press Briefing

On Pressure against South Africa over Its ICJ Case Against Israel and rejecting baseless allegations against Iran

South Africa has remained committed to its principles and is on the right path by demonstrating its sense of responsibility in defending justice, upholding the rule of law and combating impunity. This approach is particularly significant for a country that has itself suffered from apartheid and crimes against humanity in its past history.

South Africa’s posture regarding the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is inspired by its obligations under the United Nations Genocide Convention. As we have consistently stressed, South Africa and other nations that have joined this case stand on the right side of history. South Africa has faced immense pressure from the United States and Israel simply for choosing the correct course of action. However, evidence suggests that South Africa will continue to uphold its principled stance, as its officials including the Minister for Foreign Affairs have repeatedly reaffirmed.

Regarding the allegation of nuclear cooperation between Iran and South Africa, while we are proud of excellant relationship between the two nations, we regard those claims basless as they are merely an excuse to exert pressure on South Africa.
